Children are born into the world in a naturally intuitive state. Their intuition is their internal voice that safely guides them on their path through life. As parents, it is up to us to nurture this very special gift and not to override it with fear. To nurture our children’s intuition, encourage them to listen to that gentle voice within. Of course, where necessary, you will have set boundaries around health and safety.
Over the years, this has paid off, as I feel so proud of my children and feel they really have a solid sense of self that is stronger than external influences, like peer group pressure. For example, my daughter had an orientation day with a very well-regarded, beautiful, private school. When she jumped into the car at the end of the day, I asked, “How was it?” and she replied, “This school is not for me.” She was very definite about it. The school was not a good fit for my daughter, and she was listening to herself. She was twelve at the time and I was so proud of her.
Children who listen to their inner voices will be better able to make decisions they feel comfortable with. This is particularly important for getting them through the teenage years and when making important life decisions later on, such as choosing the right career and the right partner. Allowing your children to know themselves is one of the greatest gifts you can give them.
